A reconciling leader

Rev. Walker has been a trusted mentor, pastoral confidant, counselor, and friend to me over my years in Richmond. As a young white woman desiring to follow God into the work of racial healing in our community, Rev. Walker was a needed authority, guide, and counsel to me. I love her even confidence, her deep love, her steady perspective, and her strength. She is a leader through and through and one that has brought people together during dividing times.

A Strong Woman of God

When I think of Janie, the first phrase that rises up in my spirit is "a strong woman of God." She truly embodies the grace, dignity, determination, fearlessness, and wisdom that expression evokes. Living in community with her offers me the opportunity to experience her presence in various roles. She serves broadly as a Pastor to all connected with Richmond Hill. Within this work, she expresses her gifts as a highly skilled and attentive administrator, a prudent counselor, mentor, and spiritual director, a gentle and knowledgeable teacher and preacher, and an aide to all in need wherever needed. Those who encounter her are blessed by her anointing to the glory of God. Amen.

A Wise Guide

I have known Janie Walker since 2008. She and I worked together when I was shifting my faith-based non-profit toward a community development focus. Janie helped develop our leadership training materials and also launched a worship service for some of our community residents. It was Janie's wise council that helped shape the vision and mission of Embrace Richmond during one of the most crucial times in our history.

When Janie left our team, she continued as my spiritual director. As an Executive Director, I often feel overwhelmed and alone. Janie has helped me gain perspective and refocus my energy in a way that is most life giving to me personally and to my organization. Her still, calm presence helps me to slow down, listen to the spirit, and discern with greater clarity how to move forward during both difficult and promising times.

I highly recommend Janie as a spiritual director, teacher, preacher or speaker.

Through my time at Richmond Hill over the last 19 years I have come to know Janie Walker well and have worked closely with her as faculty member in The RUAH School for Spiritual Guidance and on the Council of Richmond Hill. She is a strong and deeply spiritual woman of faith with many gifts. Janie is a compassionate and caring leader of the Richmond Hill staff and community of residential members. Her knowledge and understanding of scripture comes through her powerful and profound preaching. She is well known and respected throughout the Richmond Metro area as a prayerful faith leader, as a spokesperson for racial healing, and social justice. Janie is a natural teacher particularly in regards to scripture, social justice, and the power of healing through forgiveness. It is a blessing to have worked with her over these many years. I have learned a lot from her and grown on my own spiritual journey as a result.

About:

Over the past thirty years, Reverend Janie M. Walker has provided leadership to several churches, organizations and denominational bodies, especially during times of transition. She is presently serving as co-pastoral director of Richmond Hill, a residential ecumenical Christian community in the heart of Richmond, VA.

Rev. Walker demonstrates a heart-felt interest in collaborative efforts designed to promote healing and wholeness in individuals and institutions. Committed to personal spiritual disciplines and practices, she maintains disciplines of spiritual guidance and restorative practices as she walks with others on their spiritual journeys.

The non-traditional vocational path taken by Reverend Walker is a direct reflection of her non-traditional educational tract. Her undergraduate work ranges from studies in mathematics, to counseling, to community development and church administration in VCU’s Non-traditional Studies program (1989). Rev. Walker obtained an Associate Degree in Biblical Studies from the Central Virginia School of Ministry in 1993, and Master of Divinity degree from Virginia Union University School of Theology, Richmond, VA in 2007. She graduated from the RUAH School of Spiritual Guidance, Richmond, VA in 2002, served on its faculty from 2003 until 2017, and as dean of the school from 2014 – 2017. She completed extensive course studies with Christian Healing Ministry of Jacksonville, FL; SOZO School of Christian Healing Prayer, Richmond, VA; Diversity Training with Initiatives of Change and Richmond Peace Education Center, Richmond, VA (1998, 2012); School of Spiritual Guidance of the Monastery of the Risen Christ, San Louis Obispo, CA (2002), and Intentional Interim Ministry & Transition Consultancy at the Center for Congregational Health in Winston Salem, NC. (2007-2008)

Rev. Walker will be retiring to Phoenix, Arizona in May 2019, where she looks forward to pursuing her greatest joys – hanging out with family and friends; witnessing unbound wonder and delight in children, and helping others become who they are purposed to be.

I've known and worked with Janie in a variety of roles over the years. She is a woman of God, devoted mother and grandmother, competent leader and teacher, organized, speaks her truth, gets things done, hospitable, strong presence, yet gentle speak. It has been my honor watching her use her gifts to the Glory of God

On many occasions, I have reached out to Rev. Walker for advice and counseling. She has an affinity for looking beyond the surface and helping to find the true root of the problem. The best part is she does not stop there. She helps you find solutions to those issues and assists you in deepening your relationship with the divine. She helps you learn and grow in your own personal spirituality.

There are spiritual leaders who stand out from the rest ~ Janie is one of them. She doesn't even have to say anything. Just seeing her fills me with hope that our beautiful but confused world will be okay. Her mere presence is quiet wisdom and loving timelessness. Janie was the 1st woman I had ever seen celebrate Eucharist. The experience was absolutely transformative for me ~ it was so right! I now know, without a shadow of a doubt, that women belong at the altar; that they always had a place at the altar, since the beginning of time. Janie may be moving on but "her sparkle" will continue to bless Richmond Hill for years to come. I will miss you! No doubt, many others will too.

Janie led my Spiritual Direction School where I was a part of her small peer group for 2 years monthly as well as the larger monthly group. I have learned from her preaching and group facilitation about diverse topics including Discernment, Racial Healing, and Non-Violent Communication. She is a clear and inspiring communicator in both large and small groups. She is patient and tells the truth with humor and love. She is skilled a leading retreats and group discussion.
